Has anyone here actually seen consistent gains from AI-assisted internal linking at scale?

I’ve been testing a few AI-assisted internal linking workflows over the last couple of months on a couple of niche sites, and I’m still not fully convinced the results justify the setup time.

What I’m seeing so far:

– On smaller sites, manual internal linking still seems cleaner and more relevant.
– On larger content libraries, AI suggestions can save a lot of time, but the link placement quality is inconsistent.
– Some tools are good at finding semantic matches, but they often miss commercial intent pages or over-link to informational articles.
– In a few cases, I’ve noticed the automation creates “technically relevant” links that don’t really help the user flow.

My current setup is a mix of:
– WordPress
– a custom content inventory sheet
– AI-based link suggestions
– manual review before publishing

That last step is probably the bottleneck, but I’m hesitant to fully automate internal linking without human checks. I’ve seen too many cases where automation looks efficient on paper but introduces noise into the site architecture.

A couple of questions for the group:

1. Has anyone here seen measurable ranking or crawl improvements from AI-driven internal linking?
2. Are you letting tools auto-insert links, or just using them for suggestions?
3. Do you prefer topic cluster-based linking, or do you build around money pages first?
4. Any tools you’d actually recommend for larger sites without creating a mess?

I’m especially interested in real-world examples, not just “it saved time.” Time savings are nice, but if the links aren’t improving engagement or helping pages rank, I’m not sure the automation is worth the tradeoff.

Would be good to hear what’s working for people running actual sites, especially if you’ve tested this across different niches.
