Has anyone actually seen consistent wins from AI-assisted internal linking on niche sites?

I’ve been testing a few different internal linking workflows on smaller affiliate sites over the last couple of months, and I’m starting to think the results depend a lot more on site structure than on the tool itself.

For context, I’m talking about sites in the 50–200 page range, mostly informational + affiliate, built around a fairly tight topical cluster. I’ve tried three approaches:

      1. **Manual internal linking during content publishing**
      2. **AI-assisted suggestions inside the editor**
      3. **Batch automation using a crawler + rules-based insertion**

      My general takeaway so far:

      – On smaller sites, manual linking still seems best for relevance and control.
      – AI suggestions are useful for speed, but they often miss the “real” money pages unless you train the process around your own keyword map.
      – Fully automated insertion can work, but only if you set strict limits. Otherwise it starts creating awkward anchor patterns or over-linking pages that don’t need it.

What I’m seeing in practice is that internal linking helps most when:
      – the site already has a clear topical hierarchy,
      – the target page has decent on-page optimization,
      – and the anchor text variation is managed carefully.

Where it seems to fall flat:
      – thin sites with weak content depth,
      – pages competing for the same intent,
      – and sites where the internal links are added without considering crawl priority or user flow.

I’m also a bit skeptical of the “just add more internal links and rankings will improve” advice. In my tests, some pages improved after adding links, but others didn’t move at all until I fixed content quality and intent alignment first. So I’m not convinced internal linking is a primary lever unless the rest of the site is already in decent shape.

Curious how others are handling this:

      – Are you using AI for internal linking, or still doing it manually?
      – Have you seen actual ranking lifts, or mostly just better crawl/discovery?
      – Do you limit links per post/page, or let the system decide?
      – Any tools or workflows that have been consistently reliable for affiliate sites?

Would be interested in hearing real-world results, especially from people running niche sites rather than large content operations.
