ParticipantI’ve been testing a few different internal linking approaches across some smaller niche sites over the last couple of months, and I’m starting to think there’s a big difference between what *sounds* powerful in theory and what actually moves the needle in practice.
A lot of the current discussion around AI automation is focused on content generation, but I’m honestly seeing more practical value in using AI for internal linking and content optimization workflows. That said, I’m still not convinced it’s a direct ranking lever by itself. It feels more like a multiplier: if the site already has decent topical coverage, good page intent alignment, and a sensible structure, then AI-assisted linking can help distribute relevance a bit better and improve crawl paths. But if the content is thin or the site architecture is messy, automation doesn’t really fix the underlying problem.
What I’ve tested so far:
– **Manual internal linking** on a 40-page affiliate site
– **AI-assisted suggestions** based on topical clusters
– **Semi-automated linking workflows** inside WordPress
– A few attempts to prioritize links by **search intent and commercial value**A few observations:
1. **AI is decent at finding obvious contextual links**, especially when the content is already fairly structured.
2. **It tends to over-link** if you don’t add constraints. I’ve seen it suggest links that are technically relevant but not actually useful for users.
3. **Pages with stronger topical depth benefit more** than weak pages. That part isn’t surprising, but it matters.
4. **The biggest win may be operational**, not algorithmic. I can process a lot more pages and keep things updated without spending hours manually reviewing every article.Where I’m still skeptical is the claim that automated internal linking alone can produce meaningful ranking jumps. In my experience, it’s usually a supporting factor, not the main driver. If a page improves after internal links are added, I’d want to know whether the gain came from:
– better crawl discovery
– improved anchor text relevance
– stronger topical clustering
– or just the page being part of a better overall content systemThat distinction matters, because people often attribute the result to “AI internal linking” when the real improvement came from cleaning up site architecture.
I’m curious how others are handling this.
Are you using AI for:
– link suggestions only
