Has anyone actually seen consistent wins from AI-assisted internal linking at scale?

I’ve been testing a few internal linking workflows across smaller niche sites and one larger content project, and I’m still a bit skeptical about the “set it and forget it” claims.

      What I’m seeing so far:

      – **Manual internal linking** still seems strongest for money pages and high-intent clusters.
      – **AI-assisted suggestions** are useful for speed, but they often miss context or over-recommend weakly related pages.
      – **Automation** helps most when it’s constrained by rules, not when it’s fully open-ended.

A couple of examples from my own testing:

      1. **Niche site in the home improvement space**
      – Around 180 articles
      – Used an AI workflow to suggest 3–5 internal links per post
      – Result: faster publishing, but the first pass created a lot of awkward anchor text
      – After tightening the rules around exact-match anchors and topical proximity, the output became much better

      2. **Affiliate site in a competitive product category**
      – Built topic clusters around comparison and “best X” pages
      – Internal linking seemed to help crawl depth more than rankings directly
      – The pages with the best internal link structure tended to get indexed faster and held positions more consistently

My current view is that internal linking automation works best when it’s treated like a **recommendation engine**, not a replacement for human judgment. If the system is too aggressive, it usually starts producing links that look natural to a machine but not to a reader.

What I’m still trying to figure out:
      – Has anyone measured actual ranking lifts from AI-driven internal linking, versus just better crawl/indexation?
      – Are you using entity-based rules, keyword rules, or pure semantic matching?
      – How are you avoiding over-optimization on anchor text?
      – For larger sites, are you linking at publish time or doing periodic internal link audits?

I’d be interested to hear what’s working in real projects, especially from people managing 100+ page sites or affiliate content libraries. My suspicion is that the biggest gains come from **better structure and consistency**, not from any one AI tool.

If anyone has a workflow that’s genuinely repeatable, I’d love to compare notes.
